Gown Alterations
The information below outlines our alteration process and what to expect throughout.
Basic Alterations
These include hemming the length, taking in or letting out the bodice, and refining the overall fit. These adjustments ensure the gown sits properly and maintains a clean, tailored appearance.
Major Alterations
With adequate time, more extensive modifications can be completed. These may include adding sleeves or straps, adjusting the neckline, modifying the train, or incorporating design elements such as lace appliqués, beading, buttons, or a bustle for ease of movement.
At Virginia Buelvas Bridal, we are experienced in working with complex and delicate fabrics, including fully beaded gowns.
General guideline
A gown should ideally fit slightly larger rather than too small. Taking a dress in allows for greater precision, whereas letting it out may be limited depending on the construction.
We do not recommend ordering a smaller size as motivation for weight loss. Alterations on a gown that is too small can be complex and, in some cases, not feasible. Structured designs, such as those with corset backs, offer greater flexibility for adjustments.
For best results, please avoid wearing fake tan or heavy makeup to fittings.
We recommend allowing sufficient time for alterations to ensure a smooth process and avoid unnecessary pressure closer to the wedding date.
Initial fittings are typically scheduled approximately eight weeks before the wedding, or prior to travel for destination weddings.
If adjustments are being delayed due to ongoing size changes, five weeks before the wedding should be considered the latest timing for an initial fitting.
To secure availability with Virginia Buelvas Bridal, it is recommended to book at least one month in advance.
Rush alterations
Rush services may be available when timelines are shorter. In such cases, turnaround can be as quick as one week, though flexibility with fitting times will be required.
The extent of alterations depends on the gown’s design, structure, and fabric. Many gowns can accommodate modifications such as adding sleeves, adjusting necklines, or refining proportions.
For more extensive changes, we recommend requesting additional fabric from the designer at the time of purchase. If this is not available, we will source a suitable alternative to match as closely as possible.
Alterations can also improve comfort and mobility, such as allowing additional room for movement or removing layers like underskirts or netting.
Most gowns requiring basic alterations will require two fittings.
More detailed or structural alterations may require three fittings, and in some cases, additional appointments may be necessary to achieve the desired result.
First fitting
At Virginia Buelvas Bridal, your gown will be tried on and carefully pinned to determine the required alterations. During this appointment, the following will be reviewed:
- Required alterations
- Feasibility of requested design changes
- Number of fittings required
- Estimated timeline
- Cost of alterations
- Scheduling of the next appointment
- What to wear or bring to future fittings
- Guidance on accessories, if needed
Second fitting
The gown is tried on with the alterations in place. If the fit and finish meet expectations, the gown may be taken home. Guidance will also be provided on how to properly wear and handle the dress.
Third fitting (if required)
Any final refinements are completed, and the gown is tried on once more to ensure all details are correct before it is taken home.
You may attend your fitting independently or bring one or two individuals for support.
Please bring:
- Shoes intended for the wedding, or a pair with similar height
- Undergarments and shapewear planned for use with the gown
- A selection of bras or cups to determine the most suitable option
Nude undergarments are recommended, as they are less likely to be visible through the fabric.

When selecting a gown, we recommend keeping the following in mind:
- Consider the level of support required, especially for backless or low-structure designs
- Fabric choice affects both fit and comfort; stretch fabrics allow for a closer fit, while structured fabrics create more defined silhouettes
- Lightweight or bias-cut gowns can be more difficult to alter if sizing changes
- Most gowns can be adjusted by one size with ease; larger adjustments may require more extensive work
- Long-sleeve designs are intentionally not fully fitted to allow for movement
- Highly embellished accessories may catch on delicate fabrics such as chiffon
- If a gown requires significant structural changes, a custom design may be a more suitable option
